Resolved Question: Tips for Scuba diving breathing...?

8 September 2008, 1:31 am

I have a fear of water, not what's in it but from the things you can't see. I do love the feel of water however and I can swim underwater but I won't go into murky water or if I can't see the bottom. (I know it's something I need to get over hence the scuba course). Yet the idea of going into the sea and swimming with the fish is awesome and I want to do it. I'm not afraid of the life down there. Friends have decided to learn to scuba dive and I am really keen so this past week end we went for a introductory day. Apart from the water in the pool being cold and my nerves being frayed I sort of enjoyed it. I didn't have a problem being under the water and to my surprise I couldn't really be worried about what I couldn't see...but My problem and question is that I had problems with getting used to breathing under the water. I managed to get under and stay on my knees for a little while. What seemed like 2 minutes was probably only about 20 or so seconds and then I just got all panicky again. It's like you have to be consciously aware of how to breath. I know this might sound funny but I got confused with breathing and tried to breath through my nose (which obviously doesn't work). So obviously not being able to draw air in instantly I just went back up. Do you have any advise or are there any tips or tricks to this. Only serious answers please. Thanks.... Read More »
